I dropped in at the Siletz 2010 Culture Camp. (hard to pass up fry bread – especially my sisters…). Anyway, as I wandered through the different tables where people were learning some of the ancient arts of basketry, flint-knapping and other such skills, I came across a table of youth shucking clams . Turns out that a class had gathered bay clams that morning as part of the Camp, and where preparing clam fritters. Here’s a couple of videos:
Cooking Clam Fritters
Clams are a traditional food for many of the Oregon Coast Indians, they were not served as clam fritters “in the old days”. However, many elders recall eating clams prepared this way throughout the 20th century, and where happy to “sample” the fare!
